The best students of the Mining University won grants of “BP” Company.
Representatives of BP company awarded ten best students of the Mining University with monthly scholarship certificates. The laureates were traditionally chosen during a very strict competitive selection which was held in spring this year.
BP company has already been awarding the students of the Mining University with scholarships for six years. The main criteria for choosing the candidates are their academic and scientific achievements, readiness to develop their professional skills and expertise. The first round of the competition includes processing of electronic applications, then the best candidates are invited to have individual interviews with the company representatives and the final list of winners is based on the results of the interview. Monthly scholarship is paid during one year. The amount of it for bachelor’s degree students and specialist’s degree students equals 15 thousand roubles, for master’s degree students – 20 thousand roubles, for post-graduate students – 35 thousand roubles.
According to Vladimir Derbentsov, the Vice-President for External Relations of the Russian Branch of BP, “in 2011 we started a programme of support of students being educated in the areas of energy and economics – the branches in which BP is an expert and, therefore, it is capable to find talents.” Moreover, the Mining University became its important part.
During the festive awarding of certificates for monthly scholarships the company’s representatives expressed confidence that the best students need such support. “That is why we help advanced and talented young people”, - said Vladimir Derbentsov.
Right after the ceremony there started the final round of selection of candidates for getting monthly BP scholarships among master’s degree students and post-graduates. At first, 105 students applied for participation in the contest, less than a half of them was chosen for the final round. In order to become the holders of one of 10 scholarships for master’s degree students and 5 scholarships for post- graduate students the youngsters should have excellent academic progress and publish their papers in scientific journals and work over research projects which may be potentially implemented in industry.
Besides, the committee consisting of representatives of BP and the Mining University had interviews with 18 scientific-research groups which intend to get 5 grants of the company. The funds are allocated for research in such areas as oil and gas, oil refinery, pipeline construction and some others.
The results of the contest will be summarized later, awarding of grants and scholarship certificates will be held in spring next year. Then the regular competitive selection for bachelor’s degree students will be performed.
